In what might be the most unusual name choice yet for an absolutely elegant extra añejo, The Bad Stuff 100% de Agave Azul Reserva Especial is primed and ready for a long stay on your backbar...generous bouquet laced with the bakery fresh aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and allspice. The palate is front-loaded with spice, but then slowly gives way to a thoroughly satisfying warm, peppery glow. The body is buttery and the finish sublime. Needless to say it’s too good to share with the in-laws.
Just tasted this extra añejo at the Aspen Food & Wine festival. Extraordinary and like no other tequila I have ever tasted. Caramel, vanilla in the nose & smooth. The crowds swarmed to get a sip.

Phillip Soto Mares (Felipe)
Founder, Master Distiller, Catador, Adventurer
Master Distiller Phillip (Felipe) Soto Mares originally crafted The Bad Stuff for friends and family, on site at his uncle’s hacienda in Atequiza, Jalisco. Felipe was meticulous in following the knowledge his uncle, Roberto Mares, had instilled in him on the crafting of a fine tequila. Harvesting fully matured Tequilana weber Azul, while using specific [traditional] techniques, and then maturing in French oak, with a medium char for three years to achieve the award winning profile that is being brought to the discerning aficionado.
In an interview with Robert Plotkin, in August of 2015, Felipe speaks about The Bad Stuff Tequila (TBST):
I’ve been working on this tequila [TBST] for over 15 years and shared it only with family and friends. The timing was perfect for us to bring it to market,” says co-owner Soto-Mares. “As for the name, in urban marketing The Bad Stuff means the best of the best. That’s an accurate description of what we’ve created.
